Program aims

The Doctor of Clinical Psychology combines clinical psychology coursework taught by the School of Psychology, Counselling and Community with a research project coordinated by the Research Committee of the and supervised by staff from the School of Psychology, Counselling and Community.

Program objectives

On completion of this program graduates will be able to:

• apply for positions which require a higher degree in Clinical Psychology

• apply for academic teaching and research position in Universities

• take an active role in theoretical and practical developments in clinical psychology

• contribute to the overall development of the discipline of Psychology

• demonstrate doctoral level research skills in data analysis interpretation and presentation in a theoretical framework

• demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge base concerning evidence based practice of clinical psychology

• demonstrate diagnostic interview skills

• demonstrate understanding and competence in the principles and practice of clinical assessment, diagnosis and case formulation

• demonstrate high level skills in psychological testing and test data interpretation

• apply principles and practice of health intervention

• demonstrate advanced level skills in individual and group clinical intervention

• interact ethically with clients and other professionals

• demonstrate high level clinical intervention skills within a range of community agencies.

Admission requirements

Applicants for admission must be able to meet all of the following requirements:

• demonstrate that they have achieved a minimum of First Class Honours or Second Class Honours (Division A) in an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited four-year honours program or equivalent

• Successfully completed a fifth year of generalist skills training in an APAC accredited Program or equivalent.

• provide two satisfactory and a report to address the indicating the applicant's abilities to successfully undertake the professional and research components of the program

• be assessed in an interview with a panel of Discipline staff as having the interpersonal skills required for professional course work.

Before commencing the program, students must have General Registration with Provisional Conditions or full registration from the .

In addition all students are required to meet USQ Normally, all students will be enrolled as provisional candidates, with their status being reviewed within 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time enrolment. The degree is based on supervision by a principal and an associate supervisor, therefore it is essential that intending candidates clarify their topic for research and seek an academic staff member able to provide supervision. Intending students are advised to allow several months for discussion with potential supervisors and for consideration of the application prior to the commencement of the program.

Research training scheme (RTS)

All Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens commencing a higher degree research program will have their tuition fees paid for by the Australian Federal Government under the Research Training Scheme (RTS). The RTS place entitles a student to a maximum period of four years exemption full time or 8 years part time on tuition fees for a Doctorate program and 2 years exemption full time or 4 years part time for Masters by Research programs. As part of the enrolment process students are required to submit proof of citizenship and transcripts of all previous academic study. It is with this documentation that USQ can determine the eligibility for RTS. Students who are eligible for RTS are:

• those who have not consumed any RTS previously

• those who have already utilised RTS and have successfully completed a research program. Once a student completes a higher degree research program full entitlements of RTS are restored.

Program structure

The first year of this program requires students to complete 6 credit points of advanced coursework within the Master of Psychology (Clinical) program which is followed by two and a half years of doctoral research within the Clinical Psychology field.

Required time limits

This is a combined coursework and research degree with a maximum period of 3.5 years for full-time candidature and 7 years for part-time candidature.

Credit

There will be no exemptions/credit for research project units in this program. Exemption/credit for up to 6 units of relevant coursework undertaken as part of an APAC accredited Masters program may be approved.
