Overview
This course will enable students to extend foundational knowledge and increase their awareness of the challenges women can experience during the childbearing continuum. The course will enable students to understand complications associated with pregnancy and birth and will enhance and extend students scope of practice in midwifery.
This course aims to provide the student with an understanding of the challenges associated with childbearing such as infertility, chronic illness, substance abuse, obesity, trauma and hypertension in pregnancy. Content also addresses complications related to birth such as breech, shoulder dystocia, maternal collapse, haemorrhage and malpresentation. Cultural aspects that can have an impact of childbearing, birth and the postnatal period are also addressed.
This course contains a mandatory residential school.
