Overview
This course seeks to build upon pre-service teachers’ knowledge of the Australian Curriculum: The Arts with a specific focus on the two interrelated strands of Making and Responding. Pre-service teachers will develop additional depth of understanding across the five arts forms (Drama, Dance, Media Arts, Visual Arts and Music) through an exploration of significant historical movements within the Arts which will enhance both their content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and confidence in teaching the Arts from K-6 utilising an integrated approach. This course will also demonstrate the interrelationship between the Arts and how they are uniquely placed to document the complexities of human experience and the potential to enhance attributes such as empathy and resilience.
The primary focus of this course is to enhance the knowledge of generalist primary teachers regarding the five arts forms of Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts, and builds upon the foundation knowledge they have already established. Utilising significant historical movements will provide important context for generalist primary teachers to see how the stories told through the Arts contribute to a larger story about humanity. Contemporary artworks are informed by historical events and in addition to enhancing content knowledge provide an important opportunity to enhance general capabilities such as critical and creative thinking. Through this course pre-service teachers will further develop their knowledge of how to integrate the making and responding strands within the Arts in ways that also acknowledge how they are informed by the social and cultural contexts of the artists who created them.
