Overview
Sport has an important and enduring role to play in Australian society. It is crucial for individuals who are involved in organising sport and managing teams and athletes to have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the complexities involved in both working in these environments.
Sports administration requires skill in organisation, personnel, material and financial resource management, including relevant legal and ethical responsibilities. Concomitant with these skills is the utilisation of community liaison and networking capacities, to collaborate with internal and external agencies and providers, government agencies, councils, local sporting organisations, sports governing bodies and other relevant contacts. Many HPE specialists and professionals and volunteers in sports related fields, will be expected to fulfil the responsibilities of sports organisation and team and/or athlete management. This course provides pre-service health and physical education specialists, sport and exercise professionals and volunteers with the opportunity to complete accreditation courses in officiating and coaching from the Australian Sports Commission.
Pre-service health and physical education specialists, sport and exercise professionals and volunteers develop knowledge and skills to plan, promote, conduct and evaluate supportive and safe environments and practices for inclusive carnivals, tournaments and events. They will demonstrate their management of time, material and financial resources and the strategic deployment of human resources. They will develop and apply knowledge of risk assessment, emergency procedures and sports first aid.
Students complete accreditation courses in officiating and coaching through the Australian Sports Commission as part of the course assessment. They will apply system standards and the principles of organisation and administration in athlete and team management. It is expected that students will develop an understanding of the various professional and government agencies, councils, local sporting organisations, external providers, facilities, venues and resources available within their local communities. They will be required to utilise relevant contacts to assist with the planning and conduct of the carnivals, tournaments and events.
