Overview

The creation and maintenance of overall network plans, encompassing the communication of data, voice, text and image, in the support of an organisation's business strategy is essential to gain competitive advantage in today's digital world. Current knowledge and skills of a computer network's functionality, its correct operation, and constraints are necessary to develop appropriate network maintenance and support service plans and procedures. A good working knowledge of current and emerging concepts such as network standards and protocols, local area networks and wide area networks, wired and wireless networks, Internet, cloud computing and networked applications is essential in order to achieve this, as well as the ability to critically evaluate Business Networks and the Cloud technologies and their effective application in organisations to solve real world problems

This course covers key issues related to networks and management in the field of data communications and business networks and the Cloud. Topics on enterprise digital infrastructure, using data communications for competitive gain are addressed as well as the role of management in policy and strategy development. Students should acquire sound knowledge in networking standards and protocols, networking architectures, business applications and security and should be able to identify and evaluate networking infrastructure of existing organisations. Critical evaluation of existing networking infrastructure is carried out with the goal of improving and exploiting ensuing business benefits. Exercises are provided on how to accommodate or adapt existing networking infrastructure for new and emerging technology trends. Students should be able to develop network designs that address organisational challenges and opportunities.
