Overview

The assessment in this course is competency-based. Students will achieve either a pass or fail for each assessment. Students need to pass all assessment items to successfully complete the course. These competency items form part of the UniSQ accreditation agreement with the accrediting organisation/s (where relevant).

The purpose of this practice course is to provide experimental support for level two of all internal programs and level three of all external programs in Electrical and Electronic, Computer Systems, Power Engineering, Instrumentation, Control and Automation Engineering. Engineering practice skills, such as the ability to perform practical and project work, innovation, problem identification and solution and engineering judgement will be developed as the student's progress through their program. The development of communication skills is also encouraged in the engineering practice courses. This practice course will also reinforce the learning of theory and develop observation and interpretation skills and to stimulate interest and develop self-confidence. The course provides equipment familiarisation and safety information for electrical measurement, microprocessor programming and PCB design.

This course contains a mandatory residential school for external students and mandatory on-campus laboratories or practical classes for on-campus students.

Course learning outcomes

The course objectives define the student learning outcomes for a course. On completion of this course, students should be able to:

  1. select and use appropriate test equipment and procedures from a wide range of possibilities;
  2. analyse and interpret test results and measurements on electric circuits, in terms of theoretical models;
  3. predict the performance of electric circuits from device characteristics;
  4. design an electronic printed circuit board for a specific application using industry standard software;
  5. design and write programs to operate microprocessor hardware to perform particular tasks;
  6. create software to solve a specified problem, while working as part of a team;
  7. simulate and analyse either: telecommunications principles or power systems networks
