Rationale
Paramedic Placement 1 provides students with their first opportunity to work with an ambulance paramedic service. This Paramedic Placement 1 course gives the student the first opportunity to utilise their theoretical knowledge and practical skills learned during the first year of the Degree in Paramedicine. Students will undertake four weeks full-time practical experience with the Queensland Ambulance Service.
Synopsis
Paramedic Placement 1 will introduce students to an experience with an emergency ambulance service. During the 4 weeks the student will be able to participate in the assessment and management of patients under the supervision of a qualified paramedic. Throughout this practical placement students will be expected to actively participate professionally in the practical environment and only perform skills, procedures and tasks in line with their scope of practice and for which they have received specific authorisation.
Objectives
On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Self-evaluate performance in a clinical situation with regard to skills and attitude
- Demonstrate effective communication and interact effectively with diverse age groups and cultures
- Participate effectively in decisions regarding the assessment, management and appropriate disposition of patients to a Year 1 level
- Demonstrate the ability to appropriately use standard ambulance equipment
- Apply evidence-based practice to the clinical management of patients in an ambulance environment
- Demonstrate ethical and professional behaviour in an ambulance environment.

Requirements for student to be awarded a passing grade in the course:
To be assured of receiving a passing grade a student must attempt and receive 100% (mark of 1) for each of the assessment items in the course. -

As P is the only passing grade available for this course, all students who are qualified for a passing grade will be given a grade of P. Other students will be given either a failing grade or an incomplete grade. -
