Rationale

Each musician is ultimately individually responsible for the quality of the technical and musical skills they bring to any musical situation. The individual practice of music is vital to acquiring and developing these skills. The ability to articulate a framework for practice and work consistently is crucial to any musician’s development and for establishing a pattern for lifelong learning.

Synopsis

Students continue to develop a framework for productive, meaningful and relevant independent practice as initiated in MUI3020. Through classes, lessons and online activities, students are guided to work independently to establish and achieve their musical and technical goals.

Objectives

On completion of this course students will be able to:

  1. examine at an advanced level the skills and knowledge required for the individual practice of music;
  2. develop, research, evaluate and apply a framework at an advanced level for independent practice;
  3. apply the skills relevant to independent practice at an advanced level;
  4. work independently at an advanced level to develop their own individual practice and thereby their musical and technical skills;
  5. use reflection at an advanced level as an aid to practice and learning.

    To be assured of receiving a passing grade, a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.
