Rationale

This is a comprehensive, specialist course that aims to develop professional 3D design skills for digital artists through production-focused learning environments. Through a series of workshops, students are introduced to skills and practices involved in creating 3D elements for film, television, games, the internet and print. This course combines software learning (Autodesk Maya) and research skills in relation to 3D design to produce practical outcomes for the specific intended medium.

Synopsis

Students will have the opportunity to develop a solid awareness of processes involved in creating 3D-based assets for production, including conceptualisation, research, planning, and production outcomes and uses. Students are encouraged to test their conclusions experimentally during workshops through image manipulation and modelling programs. Through their studies, students should develop an awareness of the broader visual, cultural and commercial contexts in which 3D design can be applied, understood, and used.

Objectives

On completion of this course students should be able to:

  1. identify and apply the theoretical and practical aspects used object creation and placement within a 3D environment;
  2. work independently to produce production quality assets which can be used in contemporary animated films, television and computer games;
  3. produce a work that effectively communicates with an intended audience;
  4. research concepts and processes and implement them in produce industry ready assets.

    To be assured of receiving a passing grade, a student must achieve at least 50% of the total weighted marks available for the course.

    The final grades for students will be assigned on the basis of the aggregate of the weighted marks obtained for each of the summative assessment items in the course.
