The academic fraternity with the Anglican Schools Commission is developing an Indigenous education research institute to improve their schools' ability to contribute to better outcomes for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students. This is driven by their vision for reconciliation where the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people of this country will be restored to a place of equity, dignity, and respect. The purpose of developing the Institute is to create a vehicle to submit research proposals to secure government or partnership funding, conduct evaluations, and construct relevant articles on all aspects of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander education. Topics include but are not exhaustive: schools transitioning, behaviour management, Indigenous gifted, Indigenous paradigm teaching, connection between health and education, inter-generational trauma, and education policy.

The Institute will have an action learning culture. The strategic plan and research framework will inform a pilot research program that aims to win grants and research funding. An overarching evaluation of the Institute will be conducted to measure success and to refine and reset the research framework when identified improvements are required. This case study will examine the emerging outcomes of the institute and any impact they may have on cultural identity and cultural safety Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students in Anglican secondary schools.

This case study will use a pragmatic approach to examine secondary data collected that has been collected by the Anglican Schools Commission over the past 2 years, in addition to primary data from students, teachers, elders, parents and executive and administrative staff by semi-structured interviews.
