Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the First People of Australia, having lived on the continent for thousands of years before colonization. Australia is home to a rich diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups, each with unique cultures, languages, beliefs, and practices.  This study is focused on the income disparities among Aboriginal people in Queensland using three local government areas of northern Queensland. Through an extensive literature review encompassing academic articles, governmental reports, and statistical data, this study gathers data and information on the economic, cultural, social, and environmental aspects of the people in selected regions. The published research works have discussed the various issues among Aboriginal people in Australia, however, a spatial data-based approach to address those issues were not found.

Recognising the significant socioeconomic divide faced by these communities, this research study addresses the socioeconomic and environmental challenges faced by three remote Indigenous communities in Queensland. The study aims to identify issues related to health, education, housing, income, and employment, exacerbated by poor infrastructure and spatial isolation. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing data, the study will gather land use/land cover, digitized socioeconomic, infrastructure, climate, and environmental data, together with field investigations and participatory GIS information through interviews. Key objectives include creating a GIS-based analysis to identify sustainable new income opportunities and sites. Findings will be presented in maps and reports for local authorities to aid decision making ultimately contributing to strategies that address the income disparities.
